Marelise Van Wyk

Marelise van Wyk is an artist and printmaker, currently based in Simon’s Town where she works from her home studio. Marelise achieved a BVA from UNISA in 2006. She participated in various group exhibitions locally and abroad and had three solo exhibitions to date. In 2019 she became the winner of the Eclectica Print Gallery printmaking competition. She has been invited to join the South African female printmaking collective, The Printing Girls in 2020. Her art practice includes a variety of print techniques, both traditional as well as alternative experimental ways of print in an attempt to challenge the medium in order to enhance its expressive quality to more than just representation.

In this work, roots from my garden after weeding and historic imagery are juxtaposed to illustrate our collective and personal pasts, linking the narratives of history, nature, and humanity in interconnected existence. Imagery from the historic cemetery is a silent
reminder of the passage of time while the roots and dried algae symbolise resilience, survival, and adaptation amidst adversity, linking back to the theme of interconnectivity.
